Entrepreneur, telecommunications executive, and film producer Dr. Arosha Fernando has built a multifaceted career spanning telecommunications infrastructure, media production, mineral mining, aviation, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. While his ventures cross traditional industry boundaries, his strategic approach remains consistent: combine solid business fundamentals with capable teams and pursue opportunities with long-term vision. As Fernando explains, the specific sector matters far less than the drive behind the work:

“When you follow your passion, the industry or sector does not matter. If you truly enjoy what you do, success tends to follow naturally.”

Telecommunications and Infrastructure Leadership

Fernando’s professional foundation was formed overseas. After completing his O/L examinations in Sri Lanka, his family migrated to Australia, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and PhD. While studying at Swinburne University, he joined multinational telecommunications firm Ericsson through an industrial placement programme. That internship transitioned into a permanent role, leading to a 12-year tenure at Ericsson during which Fernando built his core industry experience alongside his academic pursuits.

In 2002, Fernando returned to Sri Lanka for what was intended to be a one-year assignment. However, the dynamics of the local market altered his plans, leading him to settle permanently in the country.

Shortly thereafter, Fernando founded Sierra Global, a telecommunications infrastructure company within the Sierra Group. At the time, Sri Lanka’s telecom tower development was fragmented; operators managed projects through separate contractors for site acquisition, civil construction, equipment installation, and long-term maintenance. Fernando transformed this framework by introducing a fully integrated turnkey model, consolidating every stage under a single entity. This end-to-end service model streamlined project management for telecom operators and accelerated Sierra Global’s growth. Under his leadership, the company partnered with virtually every major operator in the country and constructed the highest volume of telecommunications towers in Sri Lanka.

Reflecting on the evolution of the market, Fernando notes that Sri Lanka has long been a regional leader in adopting advanced technology. “Sri Lanka has been ahead in telecommunications compared to many South Asian countries. We were among the first to introduce technologies such as 3G, 4G, and now 5G,” he explains. However, he observes that the domestic market has reached saturation, with intense competition among multiple operators in a restricted landscape. Looking ahead, he anticipates that market consolidation will become increasingly necessary.

Film Production and Creative Ventures

Parallel to his work in infrastructure, Fernando has built a prominent career in film production driven by personal passion. His introduction to cinema began in childhood through his grandfather, who was a film producer and owner of 11 movie theatres across Sri Lanka. Spending his early years in these theatres and watching legendary actors such as Gamini Fonseka and Malini Fonseka left an enduring mark.

“Growing up in that environment inspired me, and I had a dream that before I die, I want to produce at least one movie,” Fernando recalls.

That initial goal evolved into a significant presence in the entertainment industry. Since entering media production around 2010, Fernando has produced 17 feature films, five teledramas, and three stage plays. He is currently working on his 18th film, a major biographical project centered on the life of Milton Mallawarachchi—one of Sri Lanka’s most legendary recording artists, who released 26 albums and recorded approximately 857 songs.

The development of this biographical film involved a rigorous research and creative process. To craft the screenplay without external distractions, the scriptwriting team isolated themselves for four days in Udawalawe. Selecting the film’s soundtrack presented another complex challenge: narrowing down Mallawarachchi’s catalog of over 850 songs to just 26 tracks that fit the film’s two-and-a-half-hour runtime. The production is currently completing its principal photography, with an intensive post-production phase ahead to manage the extensive musical arrangements. The production team is targeting a mid-year release, with several major domestic theater circuits securing distribution interest.

Diversification, Entrepreneurship, and Long-Term Impact

Fernando’s entrepreneurial portfolio extends well beyond telecommunications and cinema into high-growth sectors including mineral mining, aviation, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. He maintains that steering businesses across vastly different fields relies on core management practices rather than deep technical specialization in every area.

While operational requirements differ across sectors, the foundational mechanics of business administration, corporate governance, and team leadership remain constant. Fernando stresses the importance of delegating domain-specific tasks to technical experts. In mineral mining, for example, his firm collaborates with researchers from the University of Moratuwa and is exploring a joint research initiative with Oxford University to establish a dedicated center for mineral resource development.

Looking at the broader economic picture, Fernando highlights Sri Lanka’s potential as an international investment hub due to its strategic location along major shipping lanes and its skilled workforce. However, he emphasizes that realizing this potential will require streamlined regulatory frameworks, enhanced administrative efficiency, and reduced bureaucratic friction to attract foreign direct investment.

Lessons for the Next Generation

When offering guidance to young professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs, Fernando stresses the power of setting clear, ambitious goals early in life. As a young student, he set two definitive targets: to become a corporate CEO before turning 30, and to produce a feature film. He reached the first benchmark at age 29 when he assumed the role of CEO at Sierra Global, while the second grew into an extensive body of work in Sri Lankan cinema.

“Pursue careers that bring you genuine fulfilment”

Fernando encourages the next generation to look beyond immediate financial returns and focus on building careers rooted in genuine engagement and purpose. For Arosha Fernando, true professional success is not determined by the number of companies founded or the diversity of sectors entered, but by the passion brought to each project and the tangible value created along the way.
